Spin Magazine, located at 408 Broadway, will host the launch of David D’Angelo Caldwell’s first New York City collection “Return of the Greenpeace Yuppies”. The show will be presented in Tribeca at the beginning of Fashion Week on Thursday, September 10th, 2009, at 9:00pm. David D’Angelo will focus on classic pieces with modular capabilities that can be worn in a variety of different ways. Thus allowing a woman who wears his pieces to personalize them to suit her own taste.
All of the pieces in the collection are constructed from natural fabrics of either silk or cotton, which will provide maximum breathability and comfort. With a futuristic interpretation D’Angelo’s collection draws inspiration from Japanese origami, the exaggerated 1980’s, and the androgynous silhouette of the 1920’s.
David D’Angelo’s technical background in design spans from his studies in computer programming and architecture at the University of Oklahoma. While a student, he began designing and constructing hats from recycled sweaters in 2002. After starting his small hat business, David moved to Italy to study International Business in the Veneto region of the north. Traveling around Europe and being surrounded by cultures that embrace style and covet fashion, David’s passion for design was reinforced. This led him to Oklahoma State University where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Design, Housing and Merchandising with a major in Apparel Design & Production. In the summer, prior to his senior year, David interned with Johnathan Kayne of Project Runway Season 3. During his final year at OSU, he renovated and remodeled his Arts and Craft home while employed as the Graphic Designer for the College of Human Environmental Sciences. After the sale of his home in 2008, he moved to New York City where he interned at Zac Posen.
David D’Angelo begins his design process with the environment in mind. His overall design aesthetic originated from his fascination and openness to his mother’s meticulously coordinated projects which taught him to reduce, reuse, and recycle. His adoration for design manifested at a very young age by valuing the beauty in nature, culture, and art. His passionate ability to conceptualize, design, and create detailed garments is embedded from the continuum of stories and music that constantly penetrate his thoughts.
